Building local knowledge at the lake

April 21, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Local services and smart phones are the all rage. Living at the Lake of the Ozarks most businesses rely heavily on the vacation traffic during the summer and holidays. When people visit or move to the lake it is often hard to figure out what to do or where to go first. This is one reason why we started this website. So hopefully people find us and we can offer some help.

But now enter Foursquare, a game that can be played on your computer or your smart phone.  Foursquare offers the ability to download an app for a variety of phones. When you arrive at a business or place of  interest you simply check-in. Checking in is similar to updating your facebook status or sending a tweet with where you are at. Oh by the way Foursquare will send checkins to both Facebook and Twitter for you. There is a video on their homepage you can watch.

Find me on Foursquare, matt@tonkapark.com

I have been using Foursqaure for a few days now and will continue checking in around the Lake of the Ozarks in hope of building up some visibility into this new trend. If you want to find me on foursquare my email is matt@tonkapark.com. Use the invite page once you have joined and we can compete for most badges and points in a week at the Lake of the Ozarks.  I plan to become the mayor of as many Camdenton spots before I get much competition.

There is another service that is similar called Gowalla. Currently they seem to offer more options but support for Blackberry phones is limited.

Business advantages of Foursquare

If you are a business looking to draw in new customers, attract locals on a regular basis and make sure the tourists find your great little shop or restaurant then consider Foursquare for Business. Offer discounts to those that check-in the most and become mayor. Offer discounts to Foursquare members in the area during a big event if you have open hotel rooms. There are so many possibilities that you could do with these new services to attract visitors.

If you ever need help with internet marketing or how to take advantage of these great new tools check out my company Tonka Park internet marketing. I can help coordinate some great new approaches to building brand identity and loyalty. Keep in mind most the people visiting the lake use these same tools in Kansas City or St. Louis and it would be simple to attract them when they vacation to the lake.
